How to respond to positive Google reviews (with 12 ready-to-use templates)

Short answer: Respond to positive reviews within 48 hours, personalize your response by mentioning something specific from what the customer wrote, and naturally include the service or city. Avoid copying and pasting the same text: Google detects duplicate responses, and so do customers. A well-crafted two- or three-line response is more effective than a generic paragraph.

Most businesses become obsessed with negative reviews and leave positive ones unanswered. This is a miscalculation, and I explain why below.

Why responding kindly matters more than it seems

There are three reasons, and only one has to do with the client who wrote it.

The first one is the one who reads it later. A prospective customer who sees twenty positive reviews without a single response perceives an inattentive business. Seeing the same profile with responses suggests a business that pays attention. The review was written by one person; the response is read by hundreds.

The second one is the activity signal. Google favors listings with active engagement. Responding is one of the cheapest ways to keep your listing active.

The third is the effect on those who have not yet written. When a customer sees that a business responds, they understand that their opinion will reach someone. That increases the likelihood that they will leave their own.

The five rules

Responds quickly. Between 24 and 48 hours. After a week, the answer arrives when the customer has already forgotten.

Personalize it with something specific. If they mentioned a dish, a service, or a person, bring it up again. It's the difference between sounding human and sounding like a form.

Don't repeat the same template. If your last fifteen replies say “Thanks for your comment, hope to see you soon,” you lose the whole effect. The templates below are starting points, not final texts.

Mention the service or city naturally. “We’re glad you enjoyed your dinner at our Chapinero location” provides context. Forcing in three keywords is noticeable and sounds bad.

Be brief. Two or three lines. A long response to a positive review is awkward.

A mistake that is now also an infraction

Many guides still recommend closing the response by asking for something: that the customer share the review, that they mention who served them, that they come back and write another one.

From April 2026 onwards, it's advisable to be cautious. Google prohibits businesses from soliciting reviews with specific content, including an employee's name. The public response section is not the place to direct the content of future reviews.

Be grateful. Don't ask.

What to avoid

Identical responses in series. It is the most common and the most counterproductive.

Too many emojis. One may work depending on the sector. Five appear to be automated.

Promotion within the response. The thank you section is not the place to advertise your discount of the month.

Only respond to five-star reviews. It leaves a visible pattern and suggests that the four of them bother you.

Unedited AI texts. It's noticeable. A generated and published response is often betrayed by the formatting: too polished, too long, with turns of phrase no one uses when typing quickly. If you're using AI, edit it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do we have to respond to all positive reviews?

Ideally, yes. If the volume doesn't allow it, prioritize those with text over those that are just stars.

How long should the response be?

Two or three lines. Between 20 and 50 words works well.

Can I use AI to write them?

Yes, as long as you proofread and edit. The risk isn't using AI, it's publishing without reading.

Can I ask the customer to share their review?

It's best not to. Since April 2026, Google has been stricter about businesses controlling the content of reviews. Stick to saying thank you.

Can a previously published answer be edited?

Yes, from your company profile, as many times as you need.

Does responding improve local ranking?

Keeping the listing active is important, and activity is a signal that Google takes into account. It's not the main factor, but it helps.

A note on the volume

Responding manually works to a certain extent. With one location and fifteen reviews a month, it's manageable. With multiple locations and two hundred reviews, the process falls apart on its own, and what usually happens is that you respond for two weeks and then abandon it.

There the problem ceases to be one of writing and becomes one of the system.
